A large crowd of supporters have gathered outside the Cape Town Magistrates Court, ahead of Zandile Mafe’s second court appearance.
The 49-year old man was arrested outside Parliament after the fire broke out.
His arrest has angered the homeless community in Cape Town who believe he is being used as a scapegoat.
Zandile Mafe’s attorney Luvuyo Godla is determined to prove his client is innocent.
Mafe faces charges relating to arson, possession of an explosive device and housebreaking.
The state was afforded a 7-day postponement to gather further information against Mafe’s bail application.
While Godla wants his client released on bail, the state is expected to oppose Mafe’s bail.
Meanwhile, scenes outside the court is tense as many homeless and NPO organisations have gathered to stage a protest over Mafe’s arrest.
