Mamelodi Sundowns have become so dominant in South African football that a lot of clubs can’t even dare to dream of dethroning them.
The Brazilians are on course to defend their DStv Premiership, which will see them winning a record-extending fifth title in a row and they’re 12th in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era.
Last year produced some shocks as AmaZulu rose from 13th on the log, in December 2020, to finish as runners-up to Sundowns by May 2021, something the club had never done in its 90-year existence.
Usuthu qualified for the CAF Champions League for the first time and have even progressed to the group stages, a historic feat for the KwaZulu Natal outfit.
Even with all their achievements last year, the club president Sandile Zungu is still not getting ahead of himself.
The man from uMlazi is not looking to go toe-to-toe with a club as powerful as Downs, for the league, he just wants his side to cement its position in the top four of local football.
“We finished number two last season. Quite frankly as we are rebuilding AmaZulu, my intention is that we need to cement AmaZulu as a top quartile team. It needs to be embedded in the South African people’s minds that AmaZulu is one of the top four teams in this country. So, if we finish top four, I’ll be very happy, if we defend our top two finish of last season, even happier. Winning the league? Impossible. So that’s not on our radar, it was never on our radar anyway” said Zungu, speaking exclusively to Kaya Sport.
Coach Benni McCarthy will be hoping he can repeat the miracles he produced last season and get the Durban club into those spots his bosses believe they can finish in.
With ten games to go to the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Usuthu find themselves in fifth place, within touching distance of that top two place.
