With the new football season around the corner, footballers and coaches have returned to training to prepare for the season ahead.
Among them is Bafana Bafana legend and Manchester United striker coach Benni McCarthy. The 45-year-old returned to Carrington, Manchester United’s training grounds this week, and the squad was delighted to see him back. The players chanted ‘Benni’ upon beholding the sight of the South African, with many rushing to embrace him.
McCarthy joined Manchester United in July 2022 as part of the coaching staff, specializing in coaching the first team on attacking plays and positioning.
Speaking in August 2022 after their game against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford, Benni said it was “a privilege” to work at a club like Manchester United. He backed head coach Erik ten Hag and said that he brought about a change in mentality.
“Everyone and the mentality around the club are really different. The manager brought that up, and it’s been missing over the last few seasons. And hopefully, this season, we are going to see a completely revived United. And the hunger of the players. A team that’s going to challenge and compete in the Champions League. And hopefully, change the dynamics of the set piece,” said Benni McCarthy.
