Harry Maguire, who’s captained Manchester United over the last three and a half years, has announced that coach Erik ten Hag has stripped him of his duties as club captain.
This comes after discussions between the two on Sunday, where ten Hag informed Maguire that he’d be changing his captain, outlining his reasons to the player. Maguire adds that, while he is “extremely disappointed”, he will continue to give it his all every time he wears the shirt.
The player expressed his thanks to the fans for their support during his tenure as captain.
“Since the day I took on the role, three and a half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful, on and off the field,” echoed the 30-year-old.
In concluding his message, Maguire acknowledged his former coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for first giving him the responsibility, and wished whoever will succeed him as captain the best of luck.
There is a common consensus among the club’s supporters that the club’s vice-captain, Bruno Fernandes, will take over from Maguire.
“Everyone at Manchester United thanks Harry for his contribution as captain over the past three-and-a-half years.
“The manager will announce the new captain in due course after he has informed the players.”
