Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams reflected on his experience at the FIFA Club World Cup, describing it as the realisation of a lifelong dream.
Taking to Instagram, the Gqeberha-born star posted a snapshot of his time in the United States, where Sundowns competed in the prestigious tournament.
Despite the highs and the lows of his performance, Williams emphasised that just participating on such a global stage marked a major milestone in his career.
Even though the Mzansi-loved goalkeeper made a few mistakes at the FIFA World Cup, Williams’ achievements over the past year have firmly cemented his status as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
In 2023, he made history at the CAF Awards in Morocco by becoming the first South African to win the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year title, and also took home the Men’s Interclub Player of the Year award.
He further impressed at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he captained Bafana Bafana to a bronze finish. His outstanding performance included four penalty saves in a dramatic quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde.
It is his AFCON performance that captured South Africans’ hearts.
Williams also played a key role in helping Mamelodi Sundowns secure their eighth consecutive DStv Premiership title.
