Royal AM’s tenure in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has come to an abrupt end, as the league’s Board of Governors voted to expel the club.
This decision follows months of financial turmoil and administrative instability that have plagued the KwaZulu-Natal based team.
According to reports, the expulsion stems from a series of serious issues, primarily centered around the club’s financial difficulties, which culminated in the South African Revenue Service (SARS) placing Royal AM under curatorship. The club’s owner, Shauwn Mkhize, has been embroiled in a dispute with SARS over a substantial tax debt, reportedly around R40 million.
This financial strain severely impacted the club’s ability to operate, leading to missed fixtures and widespread uncertainty. A pivotal meeting of the PSL’s Board of Governors in Sandton, Johannesburg, resulted in the final decision.
The vote, following recommendations from the PSL’s executive committee, solidified Royal AM’s expulsion. This decision will have significant ramifications for the current PSL season.
Royal AM’s expulsion from the PSL triggers significant league adjustments: all their match results are nullified, altering current standings; the season proceeds with 15 teams, reshaping league dynamics; the former 15th-placed team now faces promotion/relegation play-offs; and ultimately, the club’s financial instability, particularly the SARS curatorship, drove the league’s decisive action.
