The Dennedorp residence at North-West University (NWU)’s Potchefstroom Campus will be renamed the Siya Kolisi Residence on Monday, 24 February 2025.
The residence mostly houses the university’s sizable rugby players connected to the NWU Rugby Institute.
Kolisi has achieved remarkable success throughout his career and is best known for being the first black captain of the Springboks, South Africa’s national rugby team, a position he has held since 2018.
Kolisi’s leadership has been instrumental in the Springboks’ triumphs, including their victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
This historic win marked South Africa’s third World Cup title and solidified Kolisi’s place in rugby history.
According to NWU, this is to ensure that the residence reflects the qualities of leadership, tenacity, and a dash of Springbok magic and Captain Kolisi will be present to formally introduce the new name.
The university, which has a strong rugby culture, ordained Springbok coach Dr Rassie Erasmus with an honorary doctorate in 2023.
On the same day, Erasmus will formally open Invictus Residence, a recently constructed multisport residence on the Potchefstroom Campus.
“We know Siya for his uncompromising tackles, his head-first charges with ball in hand and his no 6 jersey that is always a reassuring sight at the side of the scrum. But, we love him for his leadership and we have endless respect for the exemplary way he has served South Africa as a global ambassador.
“With the naming of the Siya Kolisi Residence, we not only honour the player, the man and the leader for his achievements, but we ask all those that will call the residence home to follow in his footsteps, to have a positive impact and to set an example for others to follow with pride. We are looking forward welcoming future champions to these residences.” said Prof Bismark Tyobeka, principal and vice-chancellor of the NWU.
