Lukhanyo Am, a member of the Springboks’ victorious 2019 World Cup team, has been brought into the current Boks World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Makazole Mapimpi.
Mapimpi unfortunately suffered a fractured cheekbone during South Africa’s impressive 49-18 win over Tonga on Sunday.
Am will be joining the squad in Toulon this week after completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury he sustained during the 24–13 victory over Argentina in Buenos Aires on August 5. The 29-year-old centre was initially left out of the squad due to this injury, despite featuring in the first four matches of the season as he recovered from a knee injury he suffered back in 2022.
This marks the second injury replacement for the 33-man squad, with flyhalf Handre Pollard having been called up to replace Malcolm Marx. It’s unfortunate to see these players sidelined due to injury, but it’s great to have talented individuals like Am and Pollard ready to step in and contribute to the team’s success.
