Former Orlando Pirates captain and Royal Am defender Happy Jele recently sat down for an interview on Prime Sports with Mahlatse. Throughout his illustrious career, Jele has been an exemplary figure on and off the field of play, leading his team to multiple titles.
Speaking about ill-discipline among South African football players, Jele highlighted that alcoholism remains a big problem.
“There are a lot of people who drink in football. Even the greatest players drink, but how do you drink? You either drink at the right time or you drink at the wrong time.”
However, Jele emphasized the importance of drinking responsibly. “Some players will drink at the end of a cup game in the dressing room. They know the next day is recovery. He doesn’t drink to finish the whole bottle or pack,” he said.
Jele highlighted how his own commitment to staying away from such distractions and focusing solely on the game has contributed to his success.
On his playing days at Orlando Pirates, Jele shared that the Johannesburg-based club still has a special place in his heart.
“I love that team; they did so much for me and believed in me from an early age. Even when I was injured for almost a year, when I could get back, I also delivered. Half of my life was spent with Orlando Pirates. The biggest highlights are back-to-back trebles.”
