The Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has commended members from Ekurhuleni District and Edenpark police station for heeding his call for the arrest of perpetrators responsible for attacking Edenpark police.
On Thursday, 12 October Edenpark police members were reportedly attacked by community members whilst doing routine patrols.
This is the second incident in a week where police where attacked in Edenpark. The Station Commander is still nursing injuries after he was attacked and injured by community members on Sunday, 08 October.
In the early hours of Friday, 13 October, police arrested five suspects including the driver of the vehicle that drew Edenpark officers’ attention.
Police stopped the vehicle in an attempt to search it before they were attacked.
The five suspects aged between 32 and 57-years will be charged with obstructing police in the execution of their duties, attack on police officers, assault on police officers, attempted robbery of a firearm and the driver will face an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving.
All five suspects will appear before the Palmridge Magistrates Court on Monday, 16 October.
Mawela condemned the violent behaviour of Edenpark community members and the lack of respect for police.
“Let this be a lesson to those that think they are above the law. The violent behaviour of some of the community of Edenpark and lack of respect towards the police will not be tolerated.
All those involved in the attack on police must be arrested and brought to justice.
We should all have a common goal of fighting crime, we cannot allow a situation where some members of the community believe they do not have to abide by the law and decide to obstruct law enforcement officers while they perform their constitutional mandate.”
