Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star George Lebese recently opened up about life after football.
Speaking on a recent podcast, Lebese reflected on his playing days, admitting that while financial coaching was provided at Kaizer Chiefs, many players including himself often skipped thesel sessions, caught up on fame and success.
“At Chiefs, we did receive financial training, but after coaching, we’d just eat and leave. We didn’t realise how important it was,” he said.
“Some players are fortunate to have mentors guiding them, but most of us weren’t focused on the future.”
Lebese highlighted the stark contrast between life as a professional footballer and retirement.
“You transition from money flowing into your account every month to suddenly having to chase opportunities yourself. Those medals on your wall? They don’t pay the bills.”
He urged young players to plan ahead, saying, “You must prepare while you’re still playing to secure your future. That might mean downsizing—selling the flashy cars, moving to a smaller house. Understand where you are and rebuild from there. Education is key.”
The 35-year-old is now focused on entrepreneurship and growing his clothing brand.
