Australia defeat India by 6 wickets and 42 balls remaining to win a historic 6th Cricket World Cup on Sunday, 19 November.
The home defeat for India came as a massive shock to the 100 000 fans who flocked to the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad city, Gujarat.
India, the favourite to win the tournament were left with their dreams of lifting the trophy for the first time since 2011 dashed.
Australia crushed South Africa in the tournament shortly before they batted to victory against the Indian side.
The Aussie’s beat the Proteas by 3 wickets, and left South African Captain Temba Bavuma on the receiving end of mounting criticism for his failure to lead the side to a win.
On the other hand, Australian Captain, Pat Cummins is being lauded for a successful year.
The Australian Captain won a World Test Championship, retained the Ashes Test series, and ended the year with the World Cup title.
Former Indian Captain, and one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Australia on their historic win.
“Congratulations to Australia on their sixth World Cup win. On the most important day of the biggest stage, they played better cricket.
Hard luck Team India, just one bad day in an otherwise sterling tournament can be heartbreaking. I can imagine the agony of the players, fans and well-wishers and what they must be going through.
Losses are part of the sport but let us remember that this unit gave their all for us throughout the tournament.”
