Nakhane recently spoke to Phemelo Motene about their journey and how they are doing now.
Nakhane is a singer, songwriter, actor, and novelist from South Africa.
Nakhane is non-binary with they/them pronouns.
Previously, they went by the stage name Nakhane Touré.

They grew up in a Christian environment in Port Elizabeth and relocated to Johannesburg when they were 15 years old, quitting the church in 2013 and publicly celebrating their queerness with their debut album, Brave Confusion.

They spoke about their journey from the first album and where they are right now.
“I was in a place of transition, I was a such a conservative Christian before, I was just about to be excommunicated by my church, I was moving to a sort of quote and quote identity.”
“But I was honest in that, hence I called the album Brave Confusion, and I think that helped me to b vulnerable in that space of not knowing.”
“By doing that you are much more honest with yourself and the decisions that you make and the mistakes that you make, the failures, the successes etc.”
“I have been really blessed, my grandmother is doing something up there. I’ve worked really hard and there are things in my life where I think, something, someone out there is making sure that things are aligning,” says Nakhane.
They also shared their journey over the last 10 years and how they have conquered many challenges.
After acting in John Trengove’s 2017 feature film Inxeba (The Wound), they travelled to London to record and release 2018’s overtly autobiographical album You Will Not Die, which sparked both controversy and critical acclaim.
