President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa to halt the controversial R22 million flag project.
Mthethwa called Ramaphosa for advice amid the outcry against the initiative, which many South Africans opposed.
Mthethwa had previously supported the move, but on Thursday announced that it will be revisited.

On Thursday night, the president told attendees at the Black Business Council summit that he had chosen to withdraw the plan.

While the project was stalled, he agreed that the price was too high and that “we will see it once our economy is flying”.
According to the Portfolio Committee on Sports, the department has spent R1.7 million on geotechnical investigations for the project thus far.
