The national Department of Transportation has announced another three-month grace period for motorists who wish to renew their driver’s license cards by March 31, 2022.
The Department says that the new extension is conditional on them having their old driver’s license cards and proof of fees paid for the application to renew their license in the form of a receipt.
Following the end of the grace period, motorists with expired licenses who apply after the expiration date will be asked to apply for a temporary driving license.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Simon Zwane, who is the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) Spokesperson as well as Wayne Duvenage, OUTA CEO, who gave clarity on the new extension.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), there was a 597 000 driving license card production backlog as of February 1.
The department declared on Thursday that the bottleneck that existed between November 2021 and January 2022 will be resolved by April 2022, as Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula had hinted earlier this month.
The rule also applies to people who applied to renew their driver’s license cards on or before February 25 and before the grace period expires on March 31.
