Unemployed youth in South Africa face many hurdles when job hunting, including transport costs to get to an interview.
Which is why Metropolitan and Uber have joined forces to offer youth free rides to get to a job interview.
Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Momentum Metropolitan Youth Employment Programmes Portfolio Head, speaks to Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz about the Youth Month initiative.
As part of its We’re Here For You(th) campaign, Metropolitan have decided to remove one of the obstacles for young job seekers.
“Many youth miss job interviews because they can’t afford the transport costs and have no one to take them. With this collaboration, youth will receive free Uber rides during June and July.”

Proof of the job interview is required to validate the Uber voucher but the campaign wants to empower youth, driving home the message that they should never lose hope.
Metropolitan is also providing these unemployed youth with clothing vouchers and preparing them for the interviews with tips.
According to StatsSA, the graduate unemployment rate (12.6 %) is 21,9 % lower than the country’s official unemployment rate.
Some of the issues unemployed youth are facing include, internet access, printing costs for CVs, purchasing newspapers to search for advertised jobs, and transport costs.
