Over 1500 suspects were arrested in weekend operations by SAPS Gauteng. Police recovered 14 unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
A majority of the suspects were arrested during tracing of wanted suspects and stops and searches that took place throughout the province.
More than four hundred and sixty (460) people were arrested in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni District where Operation O Kae Molao was in effect.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said the arrests were made for crimes including, rape, murder, robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and tampering with essential infrastructure.
In Tshwane, over 500 suspects were arrested, for serious and violent crimes, such as rape, murder, hijacking, attempted murder, assault and possession of unlicensed firearms.
A total of 8 stolen or hijacked vehicles were recovered and 4 licensed firearms were seized.
Another 380 suspects were arrested in Johannesburg District, thanks to the joint collaboration of SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police, Johannesburg Metro Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.
In total over 1500 suspects will appear in various courts on Monday to face charges, while some were released on bail after paying admission of guilt fines.
