Mamabola shared why the new series of coins is a game-changer.
“It is very exciting to introduce the lion coin, the latest in the second series of the award-winning collection.
“The Big Five series has proven itself to be an iconic range of coins for collectors worldwide and announcing the release of the lion at the esteemed World Money Fair is the ideal platform to amplify it to the world,” said Mamabolo, managing director of the SA Mint.
Collectable coins vs Investable coins
She spoke about utility coins which are sometimes perceived to carry more value even though they are specifically made to commemorate a particular event in South African history.
“I always take the opportunity to highlight the three types of coins that the mint makes, first is circulation coins, these are the coins we make as part of the circulation and they are usually the change we get when we buy goods in-store.”
“Then the mint also makes Kruger Rands, which in sense is investing in gold in a coin form, that is an investment coin.”
“Then you have those coins which we have launched which are part of the second series, and we are celebrating launching the lion which is a collector’s coin. When we spoke the last time I equated them to collections of art. These are usually limited in mintage, this is to enhance the value of the coins.”
