While catching up with 959 Breakfast with Dineo and Sol on Wednesday morning, talented singer/songwriter Samthing Soweto opens up about prioritising his mental and physical health.
Samthing Soweto says he starts his mornings with “a jog, eats fruits and takes vitamins every day.”
The Magents hitmaker went through a phase in his life where “he wasn’t in the mood to record music.”
He says this has happened so many times in his life. “After leaving The Soil I had like a four-year period where I barely did anything. I tried to come back in 2019 and that was big but when Covid hit, I kind of became depressed.”
“I think you just need to search yourself,” he tells 959 Breakfast with Dineo and Sol.
“There was a period in my life where I didn’t like how I looked. I had a mental image of myself and when I looked in the mirror I didn’t see that anymore.
He believes that it contributed to a lot of things. “I started realising that I’m doing some things to hide. I’m trying to hide and constantly working from a place of fear.
“I picked it up, and after that, I worked on feeling good and looking good.”
He says while in conversation with some of the people he worked with at DJ Maphorisa’s house, they always asked him “why he looked broke while having the biggest song in the country.”
“It didn’t register to me. I’ve been going through a tough time for so long that it has become my norm. Even when I had the money to buy the clothes I just never did,” he explains.
“I’ve been doing that for a very long time because I come from a space where I didn’t have the money so I’ve lived my life on that mentality.”
After going on a journey of self-discovery, Samthing had honest conversations with himself. “I worked on the things that I didn’t like about myself.
“When I encounter a problem in my life I just stop working and I feel sorry for myself. I run away from all my support systems,” he said.
