Sandton City management will dispute the City of Johannesburg claims the mall owes R158 million.
Taking a leaf out of the City of Tshwane’s operation to terminate services to default account holders, COJ served the mall a pre-termination notice.
According to the mall, its owners are aware of the COJ’s intention to cut services due to arrears. However, the centre contests the amount, saying all municipal accounts are up to date except for its rates and taxes.
For now, the mall and COJ have agreed to hold off on legal proceedings pending the finalisation of the Valuation Appeal Board hearing.
This is to determine the correct valuation of the amount the mall is said to owe.
Meanwhile the COJ says of the R38 billion in unpaid bills, Sandton City owes the highest amount at R158 million.
Launching operation #BuyaMthetho, the COJ says like the City of Tshwane, they’re on a mission to “bring back the law” on defaulters.
Led by Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse, the COJ have given Sandton City until the end of February to settle their outstanding arrears or services will be switched off.
This comes after the Tshwane municipality started operation #TshwaneYaTima to recover R70 billion in debt.
Earlier this week, the Gautrain station in Hatfield, Pretoria had its services cut due to unpaid bills.
