The University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) has condemned the destructive protests at the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses.
A group of EFF Student Command members are leading the protest which stems from the university’s strict stance regarding online registrations.
The protesting students are calling for walk-in registrations amongst other demands. On Monday, the group called for all new and existing students to make their way to the campuses.
Blocking the entrance, the group of about 50, stormed into the campus, damaging a guardhouse and university vehicle.
Police have since been deployed after a fire was started at the university’s Howard College building on the Westville campus.
The EFF Student Command maintains the protests will continue until their demands are met.
They are calling for the university to do away with permits for students to access campuses, for university staff members to return fully to campus and to get financial clearance for returning students in order to complete their registration.
However the university has reiterated that all returning students have access to laptops and data to complete their registration.
The university will also provide new students who have been accepted with data to conclude their acceptance.
In a statement, the university advised students that data will only be required to view videos which detail how to complete the online registration process.
UKZN also has a dedicated call centre to assist in an attempt to limit person to person contact amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, the university website has enabled a ChatBot which answers frequently asked questions.
