One person was killed and two others were arrested following a high-speed chase this week. The men are believed to have been part of a syndicate targeting motorists.
Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhuli says Tracker Connect Company security guards were on patrol when they saw two vehicles speeding on the N12 near the Kusile offramp.
“They called for backup and police and Blue Hawk Tactical personnel responded. The white Toyota double bakkie and a white BMW continued to drive at high speed,” he says
The bakkie turned off the R42 towards Delmas and the driver lost control of the vehicle at the four-way crossing. The driver, who was alone in the bakkie, died at the scene.
Police recovered a pistol and a jamming device at the scene.

BMW hijacked in June
Mdhuli says police and security personnel continued to pursue the BMW on the N12.
“The occupants of the BMW fired shots and police fired back. One of the occupants was wounded and when the vehicle eventually stopped at Welbekend, the men were arrested. Police recovered a pistol,” he says.
A case was opened and further investigations revealed that one of the men inside the BMW was the owner of the Toyota bakkie.
Mdhuli says the man claimed to have been hijacked in Vosman while on his way home.
Meanwhile, a preliminary probe revealed that the BMW was hijacked in June 2021 in Vosloorus.
The seized firearms will form part of the investigation.
Mdhuli says police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspects to the two hijacking incidents as well as other crimes committed elsewhere.
“The injured suspect has been taken to hospital for treatment under police guard. The two suspects, aged 29 and 34 respectively are expected to appear before court soon,” he said.
