The family of late actor Mpho Sebeng is still searching for answers more than a year after his tragic death in a car accident in Potchefstroom on Sunday, 5 May 2024.
Speaking to Kaya News, Mpho’s parents, Nomsa and Joseph Sebeng, revealed that the family has turned to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for help, after police delayed releasing the accident report for several months following Mpho’s death.
“I don’t know what to say. I just need closure to know what happened to my son then maybe I will be fine,” said an emotional Nomsa.
Joseph echoed her frustration, saying the police had failed the family.
“That is the reason why we’re going to the IPID to say please help us to get closure and tell us why the police didn’t go there on time. We want to know what happened to my son,” he said.
Mpho’s sister, Lebogang Sebeng, recalled that the family drove to Fochville Police Station during the week of the funeral, desperate for answers.
“We were sent from one person to the next. We probably know 50 police officers names by now.”
“We were expecting so much from my brother, he’s my only brother I don’t have another brother. I still to this day don’t know what actually happened,” Mpho added.
According to the Sebeng family’s lawyer, Alude Xuba, there has been no thorough investigation into Mpho’s passing.
“Firstly, it’s apparent no investigation happened, secondly, we want an investigation report, thirdly, we want to know the outcomes of the investigation, and nothing has been forthcoming.
“We only got the investigation report sometime this year, almost a year later and that accident report was sort of constructed because we demanded it,” Xuba added.
Popularly known for his roles in Ring of Lies, The Queen, The Brave Ones, and Savage Beauty on Netflix, Mpho was just 31 years old when he died in a car accident last year.
His untimely death rocked the entertainment industry with tributes pouring in from stars, including Nthati Moshesh and Thuso Mbedu.
Mpho’s funeral was held at Rhema Bible Church in Randburg on Thursday, 9 May 2024.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is still under investigation.
