After his last public outburst, it’s unlikely that South Africans take Police Minister Bheki Cele seriously. However, his latest remarks that “people with tattoos are gangsters,” it’s clear the Minister is completely out of touch.
Addressing the public and media about the Soweto Tavern mass shooting incident, Cele feels he has the origin of crime in the country all figured out.
“When you have a tattoo we don’t hire you in the police because you have a tendency to be a gangster.”

The reaction to Cele’s statement was met with further criticism of the Minister’s lack of depth on systemic crime and societal issues.
Last week, Cele embarrassed himself at a public address in Gugulethu, Cape Town when he yelled at Action Society leader, Ian Cameron to shut up.
This after Cameron questioned Cele on what he was doing to stop the rising crime in townships in Cape Town.
His latest statement about people with tattoos has the Minister dealing with more online backlash, with many saying it’s clear that Cele is too old and out of his depth.
“Always showing stupidity when he opens his mouth.”
“Honestly South Africa, we deserve better. A whole Police Minister who says people with tattoos are gangsters.”
