President Joe Biden of the United States has authorized the deployment of American troops to Somalia, reversing his predecessor Donald Trump’s decision last year to withdraw nearly all personnel from the country.
A senior administration official revealed that Biden has approved a Pentagon plan to redeploy US soldiers to Somalia.
The action comes as new intelligence indicated that al-Shabab, an extremist group, may soon represent a greater threat to the region.

President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of U.S. service members from the war-torn country by 2021.
The White House also announced Biden’s decision on Monday, which was taken in response to a request from US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
“The President has approved a request from the secretary of defence to reestablish a persistent US military presence in Somalia to enable a more effective fight against al Shabab, which has increased in strength and proposed poses a heightened threat,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
