On Tuesday, 21 March 2023, the Ugandan parliament passed a new bill that criminalizes any person identifying as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
This harsh law will not only make some crimes and violations punishable by death but will also impose life prison sentences for any person who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual and queer.
In addition to this, this Anti-LGBTQIA+ law targets an array of activities that according to Ugandan lawmakers “promotes homosexuality”.
Opposition lawmaker Asuman Basalirwa introduced the Anti Homosexuality Bill 2023 to parliament, mentioning that it aims to “protect our church culture; the legal, religious and traditional family values of Ugandans from the acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country”.
Basalirwa further reiterates that the objective of this new bill was to “protect traditional family values”.
“The objective of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, our faiths, by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex”, Asuman Basalirwa said on Tuesday.
The bill is expected to be sent to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to be signed and approved into law.
Last week President Yoweri Museveni mocked and described members of the LGBTQIA+ community as “deviants”.
BREAKING: Uganda just passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023, one of the harshest of such laws in Africa.
