Two police detectives have been shot and killed in a brazen ambush in Roodepoort this morning, which resulted in a Zimbabwean armed robbery suspect escaping.
The officers, identified as Detective Warrant Officer Sintwa and Sergeant Masenya of the Trio Task Team, were transporting the suspect from Roodepoort court to the Boksburg Correctional Facility when they stopped at a BP garage in the Roodepoort CBD at approximately 10:30AM.
According to initial reports, Warrant Officer Sintwa was shot while still inside the police vehicle. He was rushed to Milpark Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival. Sergeant Masenya was caught in the crossfire as he attempted to flee and was fatally wounded at the scene.
Video footage from the garage shows the suspect, who had been in the custody of the officers, escaping the scene in the police vehicle. The car was later found abandoned on Onslow Street in Horizon, Roodepoort.
The scene of the crime was processed, and three cartridges were recovered. A disturbing detail has emerged, with investigators confirming that neither officer was found with their service firearm or cellphone, suggesting these items may have been taken during the attack.
An investigation into the incident is now underway as authorities launch a manhunt for the escaped suspect.
