Renowned South African Kwaito star Doc Shebeleza whose real name is Victor Bogopane, sadly passed away on Thursday morning, aged 51.
The news of Doc Shebeleza’s death was confirmed by his manager, Shakes Mavundla.
“Doc Shebeleza passed away on Thursday morning around 10.30am, after being discharged from hospital on Monday,” said Mavundla.
The musician, who underwent surgery in December 2024, was scheduled to return to hospital for a second operation next Monday.
Following the announcement of his untimely passing, fans and fellow musicians took to social media to pay tribute to the legend.
Rapper L-Tido shared how Doc Shebeleza graciously allowed him to sample one of his hit songs without requesting royalties.
“RIP Doc Shebeleza Grootman. In 2014, I sampled Ghets Ghetsa for my song Steve Kekana. He cleared the sample for me without taking a percentage or charging me. That’s unheard of in the music industry! Condolences to his family — he was the real deal,” recalled L-Tido.
The South African Music Awards described Doc Shebeleza as a “true legend whose unique style of delivery as an artist cannot be mimicked.”
