The South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested three of its own members, aged between 32 and 49, on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The officers were allegedly caught red-handed escorting a vehicle laden with dagga along the N4 Road near the Matsulu T-junction.
According to police reports, the trio, attached to the White River Flying Squad, were on duty and in full uniform, driving a marked police vehicle at the time of their apprehension. The escorted vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was found to be transporting 107 bags of dagga, estimated to be worth millions of rand.
The arrests were a result of intelligence received by members of the Matsulu SAPS, who promptly responded and cornered the suspects.
The three police officers are facing charges related to corrupt activities and defeating the ends of justice. Additional charges may be added as the investigation unfolds.
Alongside the implicated police officers, two other suspects, a 44-year-old male and a 34-year-old female, who were inside the dagga-transporting vehicle, were also arrested. They are separately charged with dealing in dagga, with the possibility of further charges.
All five suspects are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
