The process to rename ‘William Nicol Drive’ to ‘Winnie Mandela Drive’ has begun.
The Johannesburg council first agreed on a proposal to rename William Nicol Drive in Johannesburg after Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in May 2021.
In a statement released by the ANC Gauteng on Saturday 26 August, the party said that it had “started a process of renaming ‘William Nicol Drive’ to Winnie Mandela Drive’ following numerous calls by the ANC and petition processes, petitioning the City to implement its Council resolution on the matter”.
William Nicol served as a Dutch Reformed clergyman, theologian, and educator, and reportedly assisted in the Zulu translation of the Bible with the assistance of African religious leaders. The road was named after him in 1948.

The ANC also added that this is also the culmination of the Women’s Month celebrations and that it is a “befitting time to immortalize the Mother of the Nation, Mama Winnie Mandela”.
“The renaming ‘William Nicol Drive’ to Winnie Mandela Drive’ forms part of our efforts to cement and affirm women’s participation in our struggle.” read the statement.
