Two State witnesses who were set to testify in a police brutality case were gunned down outside the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, 08 November.
The couple were walking towards the court when a suspect approached them and drew a firearm, proceeding to shoot them.
At the time, details of their brazen deaths were sketchy, but on Thursday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the man and woman were expected to testify against 4 police officers accused of torture.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwana shared that the deceased were set to take the stand in a 2018 assault case against 4 SAPS officials accused of grievous bodily harm.
While it is still unclear if the policemen are involved in the double murder, an urgent application was filed for the officers to be examined for gunpowder residue.
“We can confirm as the NPA that there was a double murder scene, where two of our witnesses were allegedly gunned down.
We immediately had to secure the necessary evidence, that’s why we brought an urgent application before the court in terms of Section C of the Criminal Procedure Act.
With the main purpose of securing evidence in this preliminary investigation.”
Meanwhile, police are said to be investigating a case of murder, and still searching for the suspects who are believed to have fled the scene in a black Mercedes Benz.
