A state-of-the-art burn unit was unveiled at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Diepsloot Soweto on Monday, 26 August.
The WITS Roy McAlpine Burns Unit expansion cost R100 million, which was donated, making it the only public sector specialist burn facility in Gauteng.
The unit has been treating at least 750 burn patients annually.
Burn patients from across the country get referred to the facility and the unit is said to be a critical requirement in patient care.
Every year, there are several cases of people getting burnt, ranging from cases of gender-based violence (GBV), illegal electricity connections and shack fires.
CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Dr Nthabiseng Makgana shared that the expansion of the specialised burn unit will ensure the hospital provides improved health care.
The state-of-the-art facility is officially being opened on Monday and the hospital aims to decrease the number of patients by raising more awareness around fires and burns.
