New data released by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) on Tuesday reveals a concerning rise in the nation’s unemployment rate.
In the first quarter of 2025, the unemployment rate reached 32.9%, an increase from the 31.9% recorded in the final quarter of 2024.
According to the report, the number of unemployed individuals in South Africa surged to 8.228 million between January and March, up from 7.991 million in the preceding October-December period.
The expanded definition of unemployment, which includes individuals who have given up seeking work, also saw a significant increase, climbing to 43.1% from 41.9%.
