- Twelve people were killed and at least nine others injured in a mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg.
- Police believe more than 10 suspects entered the settlement and opened fire before fleeing in a white Toyota Quantum.
- The motive remains unknown, and no arrests have been made as investigations continue.
Twelve people have been killed in a mass shooting that left several others injured at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg.
The attack took place on Tuesday evening, 09 June 2026. Emergency Medical Services were immediately summoned to the scene to assist the injured.
According to police, 12 people died as a result of the shooting. Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, while one additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
“At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for treatment of gunshot wounds.
It is alleged that a white Toyota Quantum dropped off more than 10 suspects near a petrol station in Cleveland. The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances.
They moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown and is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
Mass shootings remain a serious concern in some South African communities, with incidents often leaving families devastated and placing renewed focus on violent crime and public safety.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
