The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on South African motorists to ensure their driving licences and vehicle licence discs are renewed ahead of the busy festive season.
With traffic volumes expected to surge significantly across major corridors, the agency warned that more than 2.2 million vehicle licence discs are set to expire during November and December.
Gauteng accounts for the majority of the upcoming renewals, with 851,867 discs due to expire over the two-month period.
The Western Cape follows with 374,761 expirations, whilst KwaZulu-Natal accounts for 327,014. Motorists are encouraged to complete their renewals early via the official NaTIS online platform, which offers home or workplace delivery and has processed over eight million transactions since its launch in 2022.
To accommodate the increased demand, RTMC-managed Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) are operating with extended hours from 07:00 to 21:00, seven days a week.
Road transport authorities have stressed that vehicle roadworthiness is equally vital, urging drivers to inspect critical safety features including tyres, brakes, wipers, and lights—before embarking on long-distance journeys.
In addition to documentation and vehicle maintenance, the RTMC emphasised the critical role of driver wellness.
Heavy vehicle operators and long-distance drivers are advised to undergo medical checks, manage fatigue with regular rest stops, and strictly observe traffic regulations regarding speed limits, seat belts, and sober driving to reduce holiday road fatalities.
