On Thursday, Gauteng and the western and southern regions of Mpumalanga were under a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Rainfall of 15 to 25 mm is to be forecast, with some regions perhaps experiencing torrential downpours of 30 to 40 mm. This might result in localized flooding in vulnerable places, which could cause heavy downpours to cause localized flooding of low-lying areas and susceptible highways as well as localized flooding of informal settlements.
“Thunderstorms are expected to develop from the late afternoon over southern Gauteng and southern Mpumalanga, and will move northwards to the rest of Gauteng and the western parts of Mpumalanga in the evening,” the weather service said.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has encouraged everyone to be vigilant by doing the following:
Seek Shelter: Move indoors to a sturdy building’s lowest level, away from windows.
Unplug Electronics: Protect your devices from potential power surges.
Avoid Water: Stay away from water sources like pools, lakes, and rivers.
Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and alerts.
Be Cautious After the Storm: Watch for fallen power lines and debris.
