The 12m statue of King Shaka, which replaced an earlier piece of art was unveiled with President Cyril Ramaphosa and King Misuzulu KaZwelithini as the main visitors.
Since King Goodwill Zwelithini asked in 2010 that an R3.2 million sculpture of King Shaka surrounded by livestock be taken down because it did not accurately depict his great-grandfather as a “warrior king,” the replacement has been in the works.
The previous statue was unveiled before the 2010 Soccer World Cup, 14 years ago, and was criticised for being too small and portraying the legendary Zulu king as a “herd boy”
The installation of a statue of the AmaZulu monarch that the airport is named after drew hundreds of dignitaries to Durban’s King Shaka International Airport on Thursday.
