SASSA has announced that recipients of the R350 social relief grant will have to reapply after the grants lapsed in March 2022.
This is due to the government ending the National State of Disaster which is where the funds for the grants were allocated.
Since ending the disaster, SASSA says the new legislative frameworks which were put into place require all recipients to reapply for the grant.
However, concerns have been raised by opposition parties over the new stipulations for qualification of the monthly R350 grant.
Millions of South Africans who rely on the grant may no longer qualify to receive the grant.
The grant was paid under the Disaster Management Act but regulations were shifted to section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, from 5 April.
More than 10 million South Africans were signed up to receive the grants, which President Ramaphosa initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Paseka Letsatsi, Head of Communications at SASSA reassured South Africans that the process for reapplication is not tedious.
“We have a well-oiled machine and if people are reapplying, it is not tedious. People can reapply online on SASSA Social Relief Grant and we just have to make sure that whatever we’re doing is in compliance with the law.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the R350 SRD grant would be extended until March 2023.
