According to First National Bank (FNB), the average South African consumer spends up to 75% of their monthly earnings in the first five days of the month.
The consumers in question, according to the bank, are middle-class income earners, who earn between R180 000 and R500 000 per year (about R15 000 to R42 000 per month).

In Q4:2021, the typical South African worker earned R23 982 per month, according to Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Employment Survey (QES).

The QES data displays the average wage of workers in South Africa’s formal non-agricultural sector.
The bank says that Middle-income clients are defined as individuals with a gross monthly income of between R7,000 and R60,000, this is according to data from FNB’s Retail sector.
The official unemployment rate rose by 0.4% to 35.3% in the same quarter (Q4:2021), the highest level since the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) began monitoring in 2008.
