Acclaimed South African film critic and veteran journalist, Barry Ronge has died at the age of 74.
Ronge reportedly died peacefully in the arms of his life partner, Albertus van Dyk, a week ago, on Sunday, 03 July.
The highly acclaimed film and arts critic retired in 2014, and was with his life partner for 45-years.
Barry Ronge was known for his detailed reviews in the Sunday Times column, Spit ‘n Polish.
Born in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, Ronge attended Florida Park High School and attended Wits University.
His career began at St. John’s College where Ronge was a teacher, thereafter he saw out a 10-year run as a literature lecturer at Wits.
Ronge’s career in media is vast, serving as editor of the Star Tonight, and he spent many years on breakfast at 702 and Cape Talk.
The journalist was also a reporter for M-Net’s entertainment magazine shows, Front Row and Revue Plus. Ronge host SABC’s Screenplay where he rated films, becoming a revered film critic.
