The death toll from the Soweto tavern shooting incident has risen to 14, with several others injured.
At approximately midnight on Sunday, 10 July, masked gunmen stormed the Mdalose Tavern in Nomzamo informal settlement in Orlando, Soweto.
Police were called to the scene where it was reported that over 33 people were injured. On arrival police confirmed that 12 people were found dead at the scene.
One person died en-route to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and a few minutes ago the fourteenth victim is said to have passed at the hospital.
Eyewitness accounts detail that masked gunmen just came into the tavern and started shooting people randomly.
The victims ages range from 19 to 35 years and no further information is available at this point.
Gauteng Police Commissioner, Elias Mawela confirmed the shooting and said several people remain in a critical condition.
The Soweto Tavern has been temporarily closed while police detectives are on scene to investigate.
This mass shooting has once again put the spotlight on taverns in the country, after the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy which claims the lives of 21 teenagers.
