R52 million worth of assets related to a COVID-19 PPE corruption case seized by SIU.
A corruption case involving COVID-19 has resulted in the seizure of multiple residences and assets worth over R52 million by law enforcement officials.
The assets are connected to 22 senior management personnel, service suppliers, and organizations that are purportedly part of a corruption network at the Department of Public Works in Mpumalanga.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been tenaciously investigating claims of fraud, corruption, and wasteful spending that have surfaced at various governmental levels to recover as much of the squandered funds as possible.
The SIU investigated more than 600 businesses that received PPE contracts worth R5 billion under Proclamation R23 of 2020.
In the latest case, officials were targeted by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). It is believed that the officials obtained the assets through PPE-related tenders.
