Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has expressed his sadness and outrage following the cold-blooded murder of five community patrollers at the “Marry Me” informal settlement in Soshanguve in the early hours of Saturday, 22 March 2025.
According to reports, the bodies were discovered by the police with gunshot wounds. They were also partially burnt in what investigations have uncovered to have been a quarrel between patrollers and five individuals.
Seven other individuals have been hospitalised as a result of the incident.
In a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Monday Mchunu revealed that the patrollers were unarmed and said, “We condemn in the strongest terms the cold-blooded murders and criminality that took place in Marry Me. These unarmed members of the community were committed against crime and improving the safety of their community. It was remarkable that they took a stand against crime and that is the right thing to do.
We commend the swift action of the police in initiating a manhunt for those responsible and urge them to be vigilant and thorough in their investigations. We will not allow such criminality to undermine the safety of our communities.”
Mchunu is urging community members to help the police with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“We also call upon the residents of Marry Me and surrounding areas to work closely with the police and provide any information that may lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators. The police are relying on your cooperation to ensure justice is served and those responsible are brought to account,” Mchunu added.
The SAPS confirms that the Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation unit is investigating five counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder.
