After losing his Metro FM radio gig and spending four months at home, Thabo “T-Bose” Mokwele says the experience taught him to prioritise radio and appreciate the 20 years he has spent at Kaya 959.

Media personality Thabo “T-Bose” Mokwele says staying at home for four months after losing his radio gig at Metro FM taught him the biggest lesson of his life.
“The reason I lost the contract was partly my doing. I could see that I dropped the ball because being on the radio was quite easy for me, and so I started taking it for granted and focusing on other things. Somewhere the cracks started to show. That’s why I think the 20 years paid here at Kaya,” he said.
He said the four months that he spent away from radio taught him to always put the mic – his radio show – first, before anything else.
He added that even though a radio show takes approximately three hours, it is more or less the same as working a 9-5 if you break it down.
“So, I decided to prioritise radio over everything. If you want to meet me, you must wait for me to finish my show first,” he said, adding that it does not matter how much he could get from a gig; if it affects his show, then he is not taking it.
Why I stayed at Kaya for so long
The radio presenter, who clocked exactly 20 years at Kaya 959, says he did receive certain offers, but he chose to stay with the radio station that serves Joburgers.
“Nothing feels greater than the feeling of belonging. Being a part of something feels great. This is the place, man, and I can see myself in it; I do not care how many seasons come and go. I mean, winters come and go and I did experience a few winters.”
He explained that changes in management always brings him anxiety due to his past experiences.
