In a new Scientific Assessment Report the United Nations (UN) has noted that the Earth’s protective Ozone layer is slowly healing.
In addition to this, it is reported that the Ozone layer is healing at a pace that would fully mend the Ozone hole in about 43 years.
According to the UN Scientific Assessment Report, this progress comes after decisive action was taken by governments across the world to phase out Ozone depleting substances.
“In the upper stratosphere and in the ozone hole we see things getting better,” said Paul Newman, the co-chair of the scientific assessment report.
Signs of the healing Ozone layer were reported four years ago but were slight and too early to conclude.
Despite the slow progress that has been made thus far Paul Newman explains how the numbers of recovery has solidified.
“Those numbers of recovery have solidified a lot,” Paul Newman said.
Not only did the loss of the ozone layer expose people to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, it also contributed to the global issue of climate change and global warming.
The UN Assessment Report also warned that efforts to artificially cool the planet by putting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect the sunlight would cause more harm than good as it would thin out the ozone layer by as much as 20% in Antarctica.
