Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius walks free after the Department of Correctional Services confirmed the parole board granted the convicted murderer parole.
On Friday, 24 November, the former Paralympian who was sentenced to 6 years in 2014 for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, and had his sentence increased to 13 years and 5 months in 2017, was relieved to hear his parole application was granted.
In October, the Constitutional Court ruled that the “blade runner’s” parole application be granted, as Pistorius had served half his prison term in March 2021.
Confusion around the dates of Pistorius’ prison sentence meant he served more time in prison because of the initial sentence he received, and then the Supreme Court of Appeal increased the sentence in 2017.
Pistorius was found guilty of murdering his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria estate on 14 February 2013.
Terms of Pistorius’ parole include mandatory community service, and attending therapy. Additionally, Pistorius will not be able to leave the magisterial district of Waterkloof in Pretoria, where he resides, without permission, for the duration of his parole which will be in effect until 2029.
Oscar Pistorius will walk free on 05 January once the Department completes the processes that need to be followed before an inmate is released.
