Disgruntled Denel employees will be embarking on a march over unpaid salaries on Friday, 15 July.
Supported by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), workers will march to the Department of Public Enterprises offices. This after workers report that they have not been paid for April, May and June this year.
There’s further concerns over whether employees will be paid a salary for July.
The state arms manufacturing company was issued a court order to pay workers a years worth of outstanding salary. NUMSA had approached the court to intervene as Denel had said they were in financial trouble and could not afford to pay workers.
The court order was granted to detach Denel’s bank accounts in order for workers to be paid.
NUMSA spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said amongst their demands is the cal for Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan to resign.
“It seems history is repeating itself because workers have not been paid for April, May, June and we suspect that they will not be paid at the end of July as well. At the same time, Denel is restructuring and there are fears that jobs could be lost.”

Hlubi-Majola says NUMSA isn’t happy with Gordhan who he says is to blame for the situation.
NUMSA will be demanding that workers receive their salaries urgently and want Gordhan removed with immediate effect.
