“Do as I say not as I do!”
This is a line most parents have used on their children to keep them on the straight and narrow.
Judging by the responses on Feel Good this Thursday, there are some things that listeners don’t want their kids to get caught up in during the school holidays.
From lying to their parents that they were going to the movies with friends, only to end up going to see their boyfriend or girlfriend at the time, the school breaks were usually full of mayhem.
Throwing it back to the years as curious teenagers, there were also the odd occasions where listeners finished their parents’ alcohol and replaced it with, wait for it, water.
“You’d be lying if you said you didn’t sneak your parent’s cigarettes or alcohol into your room to see what it was all about. My dad was a smoker and a drinker and I’d wait for him to fall asleep before I take one or two smokes.”
It may seem like a good idea to finish a bottle of vodka and fill it up with water because who could tell the difference right?
Wrong! One listener got the beating of a lifetime when his father found out that he’d drank a bottle of vodka only to replace it with tap water.
Listeners who are now parents don’t want their kids to head down a similar path, where they lie and hide what they are doing and where they’re going.
Especially after the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy where teenagers attended a pen’s down party and 21 died.
As a parent, you’d want to know where your child is at all times, but as children approach the teenage years, keeping their lives private and secretive is the norm.
With all the school holiday shenanigans listeners shared, one thing was common, these experiences taught each of them a valuable lesson.
Whatever the lesson, parents today have technology on their side and can now track their child using their mobile device.
Some may argue it’s a question of invasion of privacy or ensuring your child’s safety, for some, a drastic step is better than being called in the middle of the night to pick up your child from Groove.
