- Residents have raised concerns about alleged inappropriate behaviour at the Wick Street Local Cemetery in Verulam, north of Durban.
- Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) says it has received complaints about different men allegedly visiting the cemetery and engaging in the behaviour since January.
- Residents are calling on authorities and law enforcement to intervene, saying the incidents are preventing some families from comfortably visiting the graves of their loved ones.
You would think that people get to rest in peace after their deaths, but that’s not the case for some corpses at the Durban Cemetery, where men have been reportedly masturbating on the graves daily since January.
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) says it has been receiving complaints from civilians about this horrific act since the year began.
According to RUSA, different men have been using the Wick Street Local Cemetery in the Verulam Central Business District, north of Durban, during the day and in the evening, standing or lying on graves and tombstones while watching pornographic videos.
The audio from the pornographic videos could reportedly be heard by children living in surrounding residential complexes.
These men, who are from different demographics, visit and leave the graveyard at various hours.
“The individuals are reportedly of different races and have been frequenting the cemetery at various times throughout the day and evening,” said RUSA.
Residents are calling on the government, municipalities and law enforcement to act decisively, as cemeteries are places of dignity, remembrance and mourning.
This act is not only shocking but is denying the bereaved an opportunity to visit their loved ones’ graves, as they fear they might bump into these horrific scenes.
