South African Police Service (SAPS) officials at OR Tambo International Airport have arrested a 42-year-old Nigerian national found to have ingested more than 70 “bullets” suspected to contain cocaine.
The arrest occurred Thursday morning upon his arrival from São Paulo, en route to Nigeria. A medical x-ray confirmed the presence of the ingested drugs.
This latest arrest follows two other significant drug busts at the same airport earlier in the week.
On Tuesday, June 10, a 30-year-old Brazilian national was intercepted after landing from São Paulo. A medical x-ray confirmed she had ingested over 100 cocaine-filled “bullets.”
Later the same day, a 57-year-old Ethiopian national was arrested at a check-in counter attempting to board a flight out of the country. A search of his luggage uncovered over 90 kilograms of Khat.
All three suspects face drug trafficking charges and are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court. SAPS reports that these arrests are part of ongoing intelligence-driven operations, which have led to the interception of more than 23 drug traffickers at OR Tambo International Airport in the past six months.
